Did not see W., but left at his house in the early forenoon the proofs I had promised. Also with these the Bush pictures. A note along, asking if he would not endorse one of the pictures. He had not done so in case of any one of the three. Late in night, when I got home, he had sent me pictures all autographed (the 1855 steel—the Gutekunst phototype—the complete works frontispiece). Also sent Mazzini book for me to send Clifford, with this note written in blue pencil on back of one of the proof sheets:

"Say to Clifford I send the Mazzini book more especially for the 'Byron and Goethe' piece tho' the whole Vol is interesting—I shall want it returned, but am in no hurry "W W"

His suggestion on proofsheets were very light. Wondered, should we not write "Harry" instead of "Henry" L. Bonsall? But B. always prints himself Henry. The one essay particularly spoken of in the Mazzini book is heavily marked by W.
