Sunday and Monday, September 1-2, 1889

Did not see W. at all. I was out of town—at Logan: Monday was the first celebration of Labor Day in Pennsylvania.

In last evening's talk, Harned said to W.: "Brinton wrote a note to Horace in which he took up a difference with you—said he did not share your belief in immortality." W. laughed. "Did he? Then all the worse for him! But Brinton is a clear-headed man of science—I value what he says. As to immortality—well—well"—and so he ended.

Morris had given me the conclusion of his Sarrazin translation.
