manuscript in its current form for Bayard Taylor. "A Death-Sonnet for
Custer" first appeared in the
New York Daily Tribune
on 10 July 1876. It was then
reprinted as "From Far
Dakotas Cañons" in
Leaves of Grass
(1881–82).

Apparently, two versions of a poem about the death of Custer. On the
verso of the second page is "A Death Sonnet" (see image 14) and on
another is "A Death Sonnet
for Custer" (see image 4). The poem was published on June 10, 1876 as "A Death Sonnet for Custer."
