Manuscript note probably recording the idea for the 1860 poem "Leaves of Grass 17," which
was ultimately titled "I Sit
and Look Out." This scrap has been attached by a collector or
archivist to a backing sheet, together with "And there a hunter's camp,"
"(written for the
voice)," and "Poem
of "(the Devil." An image of the verso is not available.

Originally numbered 77 and then changed to 78. This became section 17 of the
cluster "Leaves of Grass" in
the 1860
Leaves
. After taking different
positions in both the 1867 and 1872, it took its final place in 1881 in the
cluster "By the Roadside."
