Edward F. Grier, editor of Whitman's Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts (New York: New York University Press, 1984), 4:1383, suggests that this manuscript might be related to the poem "Give Me the Splendid Silent Sun," which was first published in the 1865 volume Drum-Taps.
