A corrected proof of the poem "The Singer in the Prison," first published in the
Saturday Evening Visitor
(25 December 1869), reprinted in
Passage to India
(1871) and
Leaves of Grass
(1881–1882 and 1891–1892). Notes in pencil indicate Whitman was thinking of a potential connection with Parepa Rosa, a famous nineteenth-century opera singer. The verso contains prose notes about horses.
