Sir:

I write to inform you that the case of U. S. vs.Hartwell, was yesterday advanced by the Supreme Court, on my motion, and that the second Monday in January was fixed for its hearing. I will thank you to advise the counsel for the defence, of this action of the court. If you desire to submit any views or authorities not contained in the memorandum transmitted to the Secretary of the Treasury, I will thank you to send them to me at your earliest convenience.
