December 16, 1867. To Acting United States Attorney, (Middle Dist.) Nashville, Tennessee. Sir: At the request of the Secretary of War, ad interim, you are hereby instructed to act as counsel for John M. Ament, of Columbia, Tennessee, lately a wood‑contractor for the Army, in a suit or prosecution which has been instituted, or is in contemplated, against him for his action in cutting timber, under authority of the United States, during the late hostilities. Respectfully, your obd't serv't, Henry Stanbery, Attorney General.
