March 17, 1869.

Hon. E. B. Washburne,

Secretary of State.

Sir:

In reply to your letter of the 18th inst. inquiring if any evidence has been communicated to this office showing an illegal arming & fitting out of the steamer Mount Vernon, I have the honor to say that the only information possessed by this office in relation to that vessel is contained in a letter to R. Sherman, Esq., U. S. Marshal for Rhode Island, addressed by the Attorney General at the suggestion of the Secretary of State, Jan. 20, 1869, a copy of which is herewith transmitted.

Very resp. sir, yr obt servt.

E. R. Hoar,

Attorney General.
