July 26, 1869. Hon. Hamilton Fish, Secretary of State. Sir: I am directed by the President to request you to issue a commission appointing Archibald Sterling to be U. S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, in the place of Andrew S. Ridgely, resigned. Very Respectfully, &c E. R. Hoar, Attorney General.
