Feb. 28, 1871. John S. Slater, Esq. Washington, D. C. Sir: You are hereby appointed assistant to the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, without compensation from the Government. You will take the oath prescribed by law, and forward the same to this office. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
