Nov. 18, 1871. Hon. Edwards Pierrepont, New York. Sir: You are hereby retained as Assistant to the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, in the prosecution of the criminal case against James Irving in that District. For this service you will be paid a reasonable compensation, to be determined by this Department. You will take, and forward to this Department the oath required of District Attorneys.
