Aug. 12, 1871.

Hon. B. R. Cowen,

Acting Secretary of the Interior.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th inst. in relation to the suits against Gen'l. Harriman in Minnesota, and to inform you that in consequence of verbal statements made to me by the Secretary of the Interior a few days ago; of the same effect as your letter, I have already written to the District Attorney of Minnesota, directing him to defend Mr. Harriman in the timber suits.

Very respectfully,

A. T. Akerman,

Attorney General.

Gen. Harriman
