Aug. 22, 1871. R. W. Taylor, Esq. First Comptroller of the Treasury, Washington, D. C. Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th instant, and to inform you that the certified papers which you sent have been transmitted to the District Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas, with instructions to institute, and to press with all possible vigor, criminal proceedings against William A. Britton, the late Marshal of that District, and his supposed confederates in crime. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
