Oct. 11, 1871. Hon. Willis Drummond, Acting Secretary of the Interior. Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 9th instant, relative to depredations committed on the Government property at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and in reply to inform you that instructions have this day been sent to the U.S. Marshal to take such action as would cause the Government property at that place to be protected.
