Oct. 18, 1871. Hon. James Harlan, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Sir: I am directed by the Solicitor General and Acting Attorney General to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 14th inst. recommending M. T. Launders, Esq. for Marshal of the United States for the Middle District of Tennessee, and to inform you that vacancy has been filled by the appointment by the President of Mr. William Spence.
