Oct. 18, 1871. Hon J. C. B. Davis, Acting Secretary of State. Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th instant transmitting a copy of a letter under date of the 7th inst. from the Collector of Customs at Key West, and of the translation of a newspaper article to which it refers, in regard to the alleged assault upon the Spanish Consulate at Key West—and to inform you that the documents in question have been referred to the Attorney of the U.S. for Key West for his information, and for such action in the prosecution of the guilty parties as is warranted by the facts in the case.
