Date: 1891
Place: Camden
Photographer: Dr. William Reeder, Philadelphia
Note: Taken, as was a simiilar photograph, in Whitman's upstairs bedroom. Here the legendary chaos of papers that surrounded Whitman in his last years is visible; he likened the mass to a sea, resisted efforts of his housekeeper and friends to sort it out, and claimed that whatever he needed surfaced eventually.
