Whitman's Fiction

This section of the Archive includes page images and transcriptions of Whitman's short temperance novel, Franklin Evans, as well as a working bibliography and map of all known publications and reprints of Whitman's fiction in periodicals worldwide. Franklin Evans originally appeared as a special issue of The New World in November, 1842. An edited version, titled "Fortunes of a Country-Boy," was later serialized in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1846. We offer transcriptions and images of both versions here. We will also soon offer images and transcriptions of the first publication of each piece of short fiction.
