Editions printed outside the U.S.

From this page, we present editions of Whitman's writings published outside the United States. Eventually, we hope to digitize all foreign editions published during Whitman's lifetime as well as important foreign-language editions that appeared after his death. Currently, the first two British editions of Whitman's works and the first full-length Spanish-language translation are available, as well as two Russian translations, which were important in shaping the reception of Whitman in Russia in the early twentieth century, and a two-volume German translation of selected poetry and prose by Whitman. Most recently, we have added a translation of the deathbed edition of Leaves of Grass into Portuguese by a Brazilian translator. Readers interested in the theoretical issues related to literary translations, digital archives, and Whitman may wish to consult Matt Cohen's essay, "Transgenic Deformation: Literary Translation and the Digital Archive."
