Editions printed outside the U.S.

From this page, we present editions of Whitman's poetry published outside the United States. Eventually, we hope to digitize all foreign editions published during Whitman's lifetime as well as important foreign-language editions that appeared after his death. Currently, the first two British editions of Whitman's poetry and the first full-length Spanish-language translation are available. Most recently, we have added two Russian translations of Whitman, which were important in shaping the reception of Whitman in Russia in the early twentieth century. Readers interested in the theoretical issues related to literary translations, digital archives, and Whitman may wish to consult Matt Cohen's essay, "Transgenic Deformation: Literary Translation and the Digital Archive."
