The New York Sunday Times (which has no connection to the New York Times, founded in 1851) was published by journalists John Dillon and John M. Moore. During the early 1840s, Whitman worked for several newspapers in New York City. James J. Brenton, a journalist and owner of the Long-Island Democrat, for which Whitman worked, listed Whitman as an editor of the Sunday Times in his book, Voices of the Press (1850). Whitman may have served as an editor from July, 1842 until July 1843 when the Sunday Times merged with Noah’s Weekly Messenger. He published articles in the paper and one poem, "No Turning Back, signed W. Whitman. Copies of the Sunday Times are extremely rare, and the Walt Whitman Archive does not currently have a page image for "No Turning Back." The transcription has been derived from Thomas Ollive Mabbott, "Walt Whitman Edits the Sunday Times, July, 1842-June, 1843, American Literature 39 (March 1967): 99–102.
