- These notes were drafted between August 1, 1871, when Whitman received an invitation to deliver a poem at the opening of the American Institute's fortieth National Industrial Exhibition in New York City, and September 7, 1871, when he delivered the poem.

"After All Not to Create Only" was published on September 7, 1871 in a variety of large newspapers and later that year as a booklet. The poem was ultimately titled "Song of the Exposition."
