Whitman attends Verdi's "La Traviata"

La Traviata tells the story of the white-hot intrigues of passion combined with an equally hot fire for revenge, set in medieval Spain.  At the same time, it invokes dramatic realism to portray a slice of everyday life.  Verdi wrote no opera more rapidly than this, and it was to be one of his greatest masterpieces.

Giuseppi Verdi was born in Le Roncole, Italy in 1843, and died in Milan in 1901. He is recognized as one of the two or three greatest composers of his era. While is is noted for his technical mastery of the art, his characterization is what singles him out as a member of the operatic vanguard. Particularly in La Traviata, Verdi explored means of making his characters come alive on stage through melodic arias and recitatives built on emotion and feeling.
