Teaching Tools for Whitman and Phrenology
Front piece for George Combe's "Elements of Phrenology" from 1834

    •   Study "There Was a Child Went Forth" for evidence of phrenological doctrines applying to child rearing?

    • Whitman scored high on his "Ideality" reading by Fowler.  How does this fit into Whitman's definition of a "poet" established in the Preface to Leaves of Grass?

    • Based on the readings in the bibliography, to what extent did Whitman and Fowler and Wells prosper and suffer financially and ideologically as a result of  their partnership?.

    • Using the Whitman Archive, search one of the poems for mention of the phrenological organs?  What meaning does Whitman give this word in the context of his poetry?
Example:  Check Calamus for the word "Adhesiveness."
