Content:
This manuscript contains notes about whales that mirror a passage about whales
published in "Song of Myself".
A direct relationship between this manuscript and Whitman's published work is unknown,
although a possible relationship also exists with drafts of the poem "The Sleepers" in which Whitman
was working with the idea of a whale being harpooned. These notes may be a
continuation of notes written on two separate scraps and held at Duke University
(The Trent Collection of Walt Whitman Manuscripts, Duke University Rare Book,
Manuscript, and Special Collections Library), "The Whale," MS q 88.
