The lines of poetry on this manuscript leaf are drafts of lines used in the opening poem of the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass, later titled "Song of Myself," beginning: "You villain touch! what are you doing? . . . . my breath is tight in its throat; / Unclench your floodgates! you are too much for me" (1855, p. 33).
