This manuscript is a draft of the following lines, which appeared in the poem that eventually would be titled "Song of Myself": "Walt Whitman, an American, one of the roughs, a kosmos" (1855, p. 29) and "The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me . . . . he complains of my gab and my loitering. / I too am not a bit tamed . . . . I too am untranslatable" (1855, p. 55).
