Note: If this photograph is a Kurtz, it must be dated 1865 or later, after Kurtz opened his New York studio. Saunders dates it 1862, and some copies are dated by Whitman in 1863. Whitman wrote, "I confess to myself a perhaps capricious fondness for it."
