Fiction

This section of the Archive includes page images and transcriptions of Whitman's fiction, including his short temperance novel, Franklin Evans, as well as a working bibliography of all known publications and reprints of Whitman's fiction in periodicals worldwide. Franklin Evans originally appeared as a special issue of The New World in November, 1842. An edited version, titled "Fortunes of a Country-Boy," was later serialized in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1846. We offer transcriptions and images of both versions here. We also offer images and transcriptions of the earliest known publication of each piece of Whitman's short fiction. For a discussion of editorial decisions related to the fiction, see our statement of editorial policy.
