This tool is designed to display words written in Whitman's handwriting in an attempt at assist encoding problems and questions deciphering words.
The manuscript examples are arranged alphabetically and can be accessed by clicking on the corresponding letter above. The transciption of the manuscript image or word appears directly above each image.

Each page attempts to display different combinations of the letter and most often attempts to display, when available, the occurance of the letter in the following order:
capital
lowercase initial
lowercase internal
lowercase final

If you are unsure what letter you are looking for, try choosing several different letters using your best guess to see if you can locate a figure in one of the manuscript images that closely resembles the formation for which you are searching.

hint:
If you are trying to compare two sets of letters, then right click on the link and choose the open in a new window option.

Let's say that you are trying to decipher a captial F from a capital T. Open both the F and the T so that you can view both pages and both sets of images at the same time.
