Editor Globe:

Herewith find a letter for the paper. The price is $10—If used it must be printed in the paper of Tuesday June 22 (or afterward)—The letter is sent to two or three other papers in Canada (to you only in Toronto)—to one each in New York, Washington, Cincinnati &c in the U S1 on that imperative condition—this condition a point of honor—If used please send me the pay here, also the paper, as this place will be my head-quarters all summer—

Walt Whitman

Notes:

1. Whitman sent "Summer Days in Canada," as the letter indicates, to many newspapers; see Walt Whitman, The Correspondence, ed. Edwin Haviland Miller (New York: New York University Press, 1961–1977), 3:181–182. Unless the notation in Whitman's Commonplace Book refers to the asking price, the Toronto Globe printed and paid for the piece (Charles E. Feinberg Collection of the Papers of Walt Whitman, 1839–1919, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.). [back]
