John Ward Hunter
(1807–1900) began his career as a clerk in a grocery store and worked in
banking before being elected as a United States Representative of New York so
that he could complete the term of James Humphrey (1811–1866). Hunter
served in Congress from 1866 until 1867 and was not nominated for reelection. He
was later elected to serve as the mayor of Brooklyn in 1875 and 1876, and he
became the first President of the Society of Old Brooklynites.

A. Haynes beyond his work as the Secretary for the Society of Old
Brooklynites.
