Notes
- 1. Horace Traubel claimed that
"A Thought of Columbus" (1892) was the last poem Whitman wrote. Traubel noted
that Whitman gave him a manuscript on March 16, 1892, ten days before the poet's
death on March 26, 1892. Whitman likely received this letter in 1891 and used
the verso to draft lines that contributed to the manuscript of "A Thought of
Columbus," that he completed in 1892. For more information on the poem, see Ned
Stuckey-French, "Thought of Columbus, A (1892)," Walt Whitman: An
Encyclopedia, ed. J.R. LeMaster and Donald D. Kummings (New York:
Garland Publishing, 1998). [back]
