2. Whitman returned from a visit with the Staffords on April 8, 1880 (Whitman's Commonplace Book, Charles E. Feinberg Collection of the Papers of Walt Whitman, 1839–1919, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.). On April 15 he sent the volumes to Howard Roberts (1843–1900), a sculptor whom he met on March 12, 1879, at a dinner attended by Furness (Whitman's Commonplace Book). [back]
