Down to W.'s before 9, but he was not up yet. I was hastening to Germantown, so after learning all was well, did not wait to see him. He had not given Ed for me as arranged, the note for Cox. I was in Germantown all day, going there of set purpose to display my manuscript to Clifford and have him criticise my plans. Did much through the day towards getting the book in shape. Mrs. Baldwin and J. H. C. argued that I should write to Edward Emerson about the foot-note disparagement of W. W. Did not get back in the evening in time to see W. Only day except the day of the trip to Washington that I have not seen W. since his sickness.
