Samuel E. Gross to Walt Whitman, 27 November 1886

loc.02122.001_large.jpg Walt Whitman Esq. Camden N.J. Dear Sir,

Please accept my enclosed check for one hundred dollars. I am your debtor for the pleasure I derived from reading your poems, last month, on my return voyage from Europe to America—from the old to the new.

Your patriotic & noble lines are most worthy the attention of the American people. It is their duty and I believe if they knew of your necessities, it would be their pleasure, to assist so National a poet in his good old age. Wishing you many happy days, I am,

Yours truly, S. E. Gross  loc.02122.002_large.jpg
