H. E. Strout to Walt Whitman, 3 October 1889

loc_jp.00207.jpg Mr. Walt Whitman. Dr Sir.

Can you kindly aid me in increasing my collection of autographs by sending yours on the enclosed cards and greatly oblige.

Yours respy H E. Strout  loc_jp.00208.jpg

Howard Everton (H. E.) Strout (1846–before 1905?) was born in Maine but later moved to Massachusetts and became a photographer. Over the course of his career, he had photography studios in Woburn and Brockton. Cabinet card portraits from the late 1890s list the address of his studio at the time as the "Home Bank Block" in Brockton.

  • 1. Whitman may have drawn the line that extends through the text of the letter on the recto image with the intent of crossing out the autograph request. [back]
