These manuscript pages reflect Whitman's experiences visiting the sick in
hospitals in Washington during "the Secession War." Two lines from this
manuscript, "At vacancy with Nature / Acceptive and at ease," were used
as part of the poem Whitman presents in, "A
Quintette," first published in
Specimen Days & Collect
(1882–1883) before being collected in
Complete Prose Works
(1892).
