10 A.M. W. in bed still. Said he felt "rough." I did not go up to see him—only sent up Kennedy's letter containing the translation, which arrived yesterday.

Later on, towards evening—having passed a bad day, his cough violent, hacking him much, he sent out for some good whiskey, got off the bed, and made up a stiff punch, which helped him, and cheered him into some conversation, as had not been the case in the earlier hours.
