Attorney General's Office. August 9, 1865. Madam: Your letter of July 25, to his Excellency the President, was referred by him, on the 7th instant, to the Att'y General, by whom I am directed to say to you that so far as he is advised, your only remedy is to bring suit against those by whom your property is detained, or in whose possession it is, to recover the same. I am madam, very respectfully Wm. Stewart Chief clerk. Mrs. Mary J. Black, New Orleans, Louisiana.
