Attorney General's Office.
August 10, 1865.
Hon. Wm. H. Seward,
Secretary of State.
Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th instant, enclosing a copy of a communication from the Portuguese minster, concerning the seizure in New York of the Portuguese barque "Dahomey." I had not heard of its seizure until the receipt of your letter. I have enclosed the copy of the Portuguese minster's communication to Daniel S. Dickinson, Esq, U. S. Attorney at New York, requesting his report thereupon. Upon the receipt of his reply, I will give you my views concerning the expediency of complying with the request of the minister.
I am, sir, most respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
James Speed
Attorney General.
