June 10, 1867 At the instance of the prosecution in the Surratt case, & particularly at the request of Edwards Pierrepont, Esq. through Gen. Foster, the following telegram was sent, with the approbation of the Attorney General: Attorney Gen's Office, Washington, 10 June, 1867. To Edward Dodd, U. S. Marshal, Northern District, New York, care of W. Dorsheimer, U. S. Attorney, Buffalo, N. York. Go, or send deputy to Elmira for witnesses—William Roberts—American Hotel, Elmira, has subpoenas—Answer forthwith. Henry Stanbery, Attorney General.
