December 21, 1868. W. J. Conkling, Esq. Springfield, Ill. Sir: By direction of the Attorney General I return herewith your letter of the 17th instant. The case mentioned therein is one that requires the action of the U. S. District Attorney, or the State District Attorney; but the Attorney General has no official connection with it whatever.
