November 3, 1869.
Hon. Alfred Morton,
Richmond, Va.
Sir:
The Attorney General directs me to acknowledge the receipt of a letter dated the 1st inst. and signed by yourself and other gentlemen asking the immediate appointment of Col. John W. Jenkins as U. S. Attorney for the District of Virginia.
I am further directed to say that there is not vacancy in that office at present, and that the creation of one, and the appointment of Col. Jenkins to it, has not been had in contemplation.
Very respectfully yours,
M. F. Pleasants,
Chief Clerk.
