Sir:
You are hereby retained as assistant to the U. S. Attorney for the District of California, in the criminal prosecution against Lucien Curtis, now pending in that District.
You will take and transmit to this office the oath required by law of District Attorneys.
It is understood that this retainer will not entitle you to any compensation from the United States, and is only to have effect in the event that no objection to it is made by the District Attorney of California.
