[The Atlantic Monthly for January]

THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY1 FOR January is a fine illustration of what America can do in the way of getting up first class magazines. We doubt very much if more uniform excellence in every respect could be found in any of the “crack” London monthlies than that displayed by the new candidate for the public favor. The present number, besides its numerous learned and elaborate papers, such as those on White’s Shakspere and that on the Greek and Scandinavian Mythologies, which it contains, has one tale of considerable length entitled “Juanita,” the singular vigor and sustained interest of which (saying nothing about its morbidity) are wonderful. There is another thing which we wish especially to mention in connection with the “Atlantic”—its typographical execution is a perfect marvel of accuracy. Like the publishers of centuries ago, the proprietors of this magazine might safely offer rewards for the discovery of a blunder in typesetting.
