Content:
Incomplete printer's copy of "The Death of
Carlyle," which was published in the February 12,
1881, issue of the
Critic
. It
also appeared, under the title "The Dead
Carlyle," in the Boston
Literary
World
on the same date. It was later reprinted as "Death of Thomas Carlyle" in
Specimen Days & Collect
(1882–83). The accompanying authentication certificate, signed
by
Critic
editor Jeannette Gilder,
mentions that the missing final page of the manuscript bore Whitman's
signature.
