One manuscript leaf, inscribed on both sides, describing a young soldier
who died after being wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness during
the Civil War. Most of the writing is in an unknown hand, possibly that
of "R. H. Foote," whose name appears on the manuscript. The text of this
manuscript contributed to "Death of a
Hero," which was first published in
Memoranda during the War
in 1875–76 and later
reprinted in
Specimen Days & Collect
(1882–83) and in
Complete
Prose Works
(1892).
