Walt Whitman to Anne Gilchrist, 4 March [1877]

Dear friend

We arrived here safely, (Harry Stafford is with me) Friday evening and are very comfortably situated with hospitable friends1—I am feeling well as usual—go out sufficiently, & meet with many old acquaintances—Only write this time to report myself in safety, & to send love to all—

Walt Whitman

  • 1. Walt Whitman, accompanied by Harry Stafford, stayed with the New York jeweler, John H. Johnston for several weeks in March of 1877 (see the letter from Whitman to John H. Johnston of December 20, 1876). He was in New York from March 2 to 27 (Commonplace Book, Charles E. Feinberg Collection of the Papers of Walt Whitman, 1839–1919, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.), during which time he also stayed with naturalist John Burroughs. [back]
