Gutekunst made this photogravure from one of seven photographs taken during a session with the Edy Brothers in the summer of 1880 on Whitman's trip to Canada to visit Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke. Whitman thought Gutekunst was “on top of the heap” as far as photographers went, and considered this photo “a first-rater–one of the best, anyhow” (Horace Traubel, With Walt Whitman in Camden, Tuesday, September 3, 1889). This session occurred on September 22, 1880.
